WELCOME TO MY SITE AND HAVE A GOOD DAY

If this is your first time in this site, welcome. It has been my dream that my province, Marinduque, Philippines becomes a world tourist destination not only during Easter Week but also whole year round. You can help me achieve my dream by telling your friends about this site. The photo above is your own private beach at The Chateau Du Mer Beach Resort. The sand is not as white as Boracay, but it is only a few steps from your front yard and away from the mayhem and crowds of Boracay. I have posted some of my favorite Filipino and American dishes and recipes on this site also. Some of the photos and videos on this site, I do not own. However, I have no intention on infringement of your copyrights. Cheers!

Restorations of the UP Chapel of Holy Sacrifice in Diliman, Q.C.

I have pleasant memories of this Chapel. The first mass and completion of this chapel was on December 20, 1955. That day was my 21st birthday. It was also the year of my appointment as Assistant Instructor in Chemistry, College of Liberal Arts(at that time). For more detail On my personal involvement with this Chapel, Fr Delaney and UPSCA visit the site at the bottom of this page.

The following write up is from Goodnewsphilippines.com. It was published in FB and here is my comment.

"I have pleasant memories of this Chapel. Under the foundation of this chapel is buried 1000 names of Students(UPSCANS), Professors and Diliman Residents in 1954 who went to mass daily for 365 days and contributed to the building fund. I am very proud to announce that my name is one of the 1000 names in the foundation of this historic landmark".

The University of the Philippines Chapel, also known as the Parish Church of the Holy Sacrifice in Diliman, Quezon City, has received initial restoration work to repaint its interior and exterior facades and repair its worn-out parts.

The 65-year-old circular structure with the unique dome is a national historical landmark and cultural treasure completed on December 20, 1955. Designed by national artist for architecture Leandro Locsin and built by Engr. David M. Consunji, the founder of DMCI group of companies, the chapel underwent initial restoration from July 2020 to December 2020.

After a series of consultations with UP officials and the UP Parish, DMCI Homes led a team that facilitated the repair of masonry cracks, de-clogging of downspouts and drains, and the installation of new electrical fixtures. Repainting work was performed on the chapel’s iconic dome and roof as well as its walls, columns, eaves, under slabs, ceilings, and railings.

The murals depicting the Stations of the Cross, the marble altar, the floor mural, and the cross at the center of the chapel – all handiworks of national artists – were left untouched during the rehabilitation.

In 2021, DMCI is scheduled to next restore the chapel’s ceiling or the underside of the dome.

Restored walls of the U.P. Chapel.

The UP Chapel is considered an important architectural landmark due to its unique and timeless design as it is the first circular chapel in the country with the altar in its center for a more personal and engaging community worship experience. It is also the first structure in the country to feature a remarkable thin-shell concrete dome, made possible through Engr. Consunji’s innovation in the mixing and delivery of concrete.

It is the only structure in the country to feature the works of five national artists:

  • Arturo Luz designed the floor mural, titled the “River of Life”, executed in terazzo and radiating from the altar
  • Napoleon Abueva created the giant wooden double-sided crucifix and the altar base
  • Vicente Manansala and Ang Kiukok painted the 15 murals of the Stations of the Cross
  • Leandro Locsin designed the chapel structure

These five men—Locsin, Luz, Abueva, Manansala, and Kiukok—were later on named National Artists of the Philippines, making the UP Chapel the only structure in the country to feature the works of five National Artists. With its unique and timeless architectural design, the UP Chapel has been recognized as a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and a Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.

More Historical Notes on the UP Chapel

The UP Chapel had its beginnings in 1954 when Fr. John Patrick Delaney, S.J., who was the UP chaplain during the transfer of the University’s campus from Manila to Diliman in 1949, saw the need for a more permanent structure to replace the sawali-bamboo building that until then had been serving as the house of worship for the Catholics in the UP community.

Fr. Delaney came up with the concept for the UP Church and commissioned young, up-and-coming UP artists, engineers, and an architect to build the structure. Architect Leandro Locsin designed the church according to Fr. Delaney’s vision of a Church centered on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, with the priest close to his parishioners in a spirit of oneness and communion—a Church whose doors would always be open to anyone seeking to talk to God.

Engr. Alfredo Juinio, who served as the structural engineer for the project, and Engr. David Consunji, founder of the DMCI Group of Companies, constructed it as the country’s first circular, concentrically arranged chapel with the altar at its center. It is also the first to have a thin shell concrete dome, supported by pillars located at the sides of the church; so there are no supports to block the space inside. The thin shell-dome was made possible through Engr. Consunji’s innovation in the mixing and delivery of concrete.

Churches around the Philippines have been undergoing restoration work in preparation for the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the Christian faith in the islands, including the San Agustin Church in Intramuros and the Barasoain Church in Bulacan.

A Visit to Mount Vernon-Home of George and Martha Washington

I was watching the PBS "United in Song" Broadcast last New Year's Eve. The background of the show was in Mount Vernon-the home and plantation estate of George Washington.

The PBS show reminded me of our visit to this historic place and landmark when Macrine( RIP) and I were still residing in Maryland.

It was a whole day trip from our residence. It was very educational and we had a memorable visit to the home and plantation of the Martha and George Washington -The First Lady and President of the US. Here are two videos for your viewing pleasure.

Mount Vernon is an American landmark and former plantation of George Washington, the first President of the United States, and his wife, Martha Washington. The estate is on the banks of the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, near Alexandria, across from Prince George's County, Maryland. The Washington family had owned land in the area since 1674. Around 1734, they embarked on an expansion of the estate that continued under George Washington, who began leasing the estate in 1754 but did not become its sole owner until 1761.

The mansion was built of wood in a loose Palladian style; the original house was built by George Washington's father Augustine, around 1734. George Washington expanded the house twice, once in the late 1750s and again in the 1770s. It remained Washington's home for the rest of his life. Following his death in 1799, under the ownership of several successive generations of the family, the estate progressively declined as revenues were insufficient to maintain it adequately. In 1858, the house's historical importance was recognized and it was saved from ruin by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association; this philanthropic organization acquired it together with part of the Washington property estate. Escaping the damage suffered by many plantation houses during the American Civil War, Mount Vernon was restored.

Mount Vernon was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is still owned and maintained in trust by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and is open every day of the year. Allowing the public to see the estate is not an innovation, but part of an over 200-year-old tradition started by George Washington himself. In 1794 he wrote: "I have no objection to any sober or orderly person's gratifying their curiosity in viewing the buildings, Gardens, &ca. about Mount Vernon."

As of 2020, the estate had received more than 85 million visitors. In addition to the mansion, visitors can see original and reconstructed outbuildings and barns (including slaves' quarters), an operational blacksmith shop, and the Pioneer Farm. Each year on Christmas Day, Aladdin the Christmas Camel recreates Washington's 1787 hiring of a camel for 18 shillings to entertain his guests with an example of the animal that brought the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem to visit the newborn Jesus.

Mount Vernon remains a privately owned property. The non-profit Mount Vernon Ladies' Association has not received any funds from the federal government to support the restoration and maintenance of the mansion and the estate's 500-acre (2.0 km2) grounds or its educational programs and activities.

The association derives its income from charitable donations and the sales of tickets, produce and goods to visitors. These enable the Association to continue its mission "to preserve, restore, and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards and to educate visitors and people throughout the world about the life and legacies of George Washington, so that his example of character and leadership will continue to inform and inspire future generations." Admission to Mount Vernon is free on Presidents' Day (the third Monday of February) and on George Washington's birthday (February 22).

Mount Vernon
1956 issue

In 1956, a 1.5-cent stamp within the Liberty Issue of U.S. postage stamps memorialized Mount Vernon as a national shrine. The Liberty Issue was originally planned to honor six presidents, six famous Americans, and six historic national shrines. The Mount Vernon stamp, which featured a view of Washington's home facing the Potomac River, was the issue's first that commemorated a shrine.

Mount Vernon was put on the tentative list for World Heritage Site status in the early 2000s. It was submitted but failed to get approved. In 2014, Mount Vernon awarded its first Cyrus A. Ansary Prize for Courage and Character to former President George H. W. Bush.

Two Enjoyable TV Mini Series on HBO and Netflix

Last month, I finished watching two entertaining miniseries on Netflix, The Queen's Gambit and the Undoing. The Queen's Gambit is about a young female orphaned chess prodigy breaking the glass ceiling on the male dominated world of International chess.

The Undoing is a high budget thriller about a pediatric oncologist suffering from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) which reminds me of our current Lame-Duck President Donald Trump.

The Queen's Gambit is a 2020 American coming-of-age period drama streaming television miniseries based on Walter Tevis's 1983 novel of the same name. It was created for Netflix by Scott Frank and Allan Scott, and written and directed by the former. Beginning mid-1950s and proceeding into the 1960s, the story is about an orphaned chess prodigy on her rise to becoming the world's greatest chess player while struggling with emotional problems and drug and alcohol dependency.

The Queen's Gambit was released on October 23, 2020. After four weeks of viewing it became Netflix's most-watched scripted miniseries. It has received critical acclaim for Anya Taylor-Joy's performance as Beth Harmon as well as for the cinematography and production values. It has also received a positive response from the chess community and is credited with spurring a resurgence of public interest in the game.

Audience viewership

On October 28, 2020, the series became the most watched series of the day on Netflix. On November 23, 2020, it was announced that the series had been watched by 62 million households since its release (according to the way Netflix itself reports viewership), becoming "Netflix's biggest scripted limited series to date."Of this, Scott Frank stated "I am both delighted and dazed by the response" while several outlets characterized it as an "unlikely success". The series topped the Nielsen's U.S. streaming rankings for the weeks of October 26 to November 1, 2020, and November 2 to November 8, 2020.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, The Queen's Gambit received an approval rating of 100% based on 74 reviews, with an average rating of 8.06/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Its moves aren't always perfect, but between Anya Taylor-Joy's magnetic performance, incredibly realized period details, and emotionally intelligent writing, The Queen's Gambit is an absolute win." Metacritic gave the series a weighted average score of 79 out of 100 based on 28 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".

In a column where she argues "So many lives would be different if we’d had 'The Queen’s Gambit' 50 years ago," culture critic Mary McNamara said, "I loved 'The Queen’s Gambit' so much, I watched the final episode three times."

-OK, so there we have it: our top 5 online psychic reading providers! But if you’re new to the world of online psychic reading, you probably have some questions, right?

No worries! Before you book your psychic reading, have a look at our FAQs…

Q. What is a psychic reading?

A. Psychics are people who have the ability to access information not available through normal human senses. During a psychic reading, psychics use these gifts to uncover truths about their customers.

Now, this sounds a little scary, but don’t worry: psychics aren’t interested in uncovering your secrets! Instead, they use the knowledge they gather to give advice and offer insight.

Maybe you’re at a crossroads in your career, or perhaps you’re struggling to find love. Whatever your issue, a psychic will aim to help you move forward in your life.

But whilst all psychics aim to help you, their methods can vary. Some will use tools like tarot cards or runes to give readings. Others will consult spirit guides or angels during their practice. And that means that it’s important that you do some research before you book.

Q. How do I prepare for my online reading?

A. When you have a speak with a psychics, you want to ensure that you get the most you can out of your readings. And this means being prepared:

-Start by doing some research. This way you can make sure you speak to a real psychic who is both accurate and empathetic. We advise using one of the services outlines on this list and reading individual psychics reviews.

-Next, prepare some questions. It can be difficult to think on the spot during readings with psychics: having a list prepared can help you feel more in control.

-Then, relax! Choose a quiet and peaceful spot and take some deep breaths. Your reading is about you, so try to enjoy it.

Q. What type of online psychic readings are best?

A. When you use a psychic service, you have a choice between chat, email, video, and phone readings. But the best psychic contact method depends entirely on your preferences.

Do you prefer to speak verbally? Phone psychics are probably your best match. Are you better at typing than speaking out loud? Then chat with online psychics through a website or app.

Q. What happens during readings with online psychics?

When you speak to a psychic online they will probably take a moment or two to get to know you. During this time they will aim to help you relax, and they will discuss the reason for your call.

Then they will use their gifts to focus on your unique energy (this allows them to connect psychically with you!).

Once connected, your session will begin.

Now, what happens next will depend on the type of session you have booked, and what tools the psychic uses. For example, they may connect with their spirit guides to provide information about your, one true love, family relationships, or your career.

Or, if you chose to speak with a medium psychic, they may begin channeling the spirit of one of your loved ones.

But no matter which type of psychic you have chosen to speak with, you should be given the opportunity to ask some follow-up questions.

Then, once you are satisfied, your session will end and you may be asked to provide feedback. If you have the time to leave a review, please do! That way, you’ll help future customers choose the best psychic advisor for them.

New Year's Eve Traditions in the Philippines and Other Countries

Happy New Year to All! Good bye 2020. Welcome 2021.

Twelve Round Fruits in Your Table for Prosperity and Wealth-Filipino Traditions at New Year

The past years, I have posted New Years Eve and Day Traditions and Superstition ( see website at end of this blog) in the Philippines. Today I am reprinting for your information 12 Fascinating New Years Eve traditions from other parts of the world as follows:

Twelve Fascinating New Year’s Eve Traditions from Around The World by

1 / 13
New Years from Around the WorldShutterstock / MEzairi

In the U.S., we usher out the last day of the year with cocktails, ball drops and fireworks. Elsewhere, other types of symbolism play a big role in this final holiday of the season.

2 / 13
Taste of Home

Japan

Just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, the Japanese eat soba noodles. The Toshikoshi soba, which translates to a “year-crossing” buckwheat noodle dish, has lots of symbolism. The long noodle denotes the crossing from one year to the next. Since it’s an easily cut noodle, it signifies a letting go of the past year’s regrets—a cutting-off, if you will, before the fresh start the new year brings.

Spain

In Spain, with 12 seconds remaining until the New Year, people eat 12 green grapes to bring good luck in the coming year. It’s thought to be bad luck if you can’t eat them all by the final midnight chime. But gobble them down in time and 12 months of good fortune will come your way.

4 / 13
Taste of Home

France

The French usually ring in the New Year with a huge feast, commonly know as le réveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre. The meal is full of traditional, decadent eats, including foie gras, oysters, lobster and escargot. And, just like in the U.S., champagne is the drink of choice.

Italy

Italians love lentils for their coin-like shape, symbolizing luck and prosperity. A New Year’s Eve dinner usually features this legume to bring on luck in the coming year. Pork is often added to lentil dishes in the form of cotechino, a spicy sausage, or zampone, a deboned pig trotter, to represent the plenitude of the land.

Colombia

On the last night of the year, Colombians place three potatoes—one peeled, one unpeeled, and one half peeled—under their beds. At midnight, they pull out the first potato they touch. Peeled means they’ll have financial problems, unpeeled indicates abundance, and half peeled…well, somewhere in between.

Australia

Australians celebrate the New Year with midnight fireworks in cities and towns throughout the country. Firework displays are launched off bridges, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, from jetties along the beaches, and on river banks, with the lights of the fireworks sparkling off the water. In a typical year, people pack picnic baskets and arrive hours early to get the best viewing spots.

The Philippines

Filipino culture celebrates the New Year by serving 12 round fruits. The round shape symbolizes coins, which represent prosperity and wealth for each month of the upcoming year. Apples, melons, oranges and grapes are popular picks, but any round fruit will do.

Denmark

After a traditional New Year’s Eve meal of boiled cod with mustard, the Danes eat a tower of marzipan doughnuts called kransekage, meaning “wreath cake.” It was once called overflødighedshorn (cornucopia), because the whole doughnut tower was tipped on its side, with chocolate and treats spilling out. This traditional cake is also served at weddings and birthdays.

Ice fishing. Winter fishingShutterstock / Alexander Lukatskiy

Canada

In rural areas of Canada, New Year’s Eve is a time to spend ice fishing with friends. Celebrations on the frozen ponds and rivers tend to last all night as buddies fish in the open or in fishing shacks and perhaps catch a fish or two to help celebrate the coming year.

Taste of Home

Ireland

The Irish have a tradition of banging bread against the walls of their houses on New Year’s Eve. The idea is that bad luck and evil spirits are chased away and good luck is invited in. It also ensures that the coming year will be filled with an abundance of bread and other food.

Brazil

In Brazil, particular foods are eaten to invite good luck for the coming year. Seven is the lucky number on New Year’s Eve, so seven pomegranate seeds are eaten to keep the purse full, and seven grapes ensure abundance in all areas of life. Some Brazilians also jump over seven waves in the ocean and make seven wishes for the new year as they leap.

Greece

The Greeks ring in the new year by eating vasilopita, a sweet yeast bread. Eaten at midnight, the bread is made in honor of Greece’s revered St. Basil. Before serving the family, beginning with the oldest member, households set a slice of bread aside for the saint and another portion for those in need. A coin is baked into the bread and the person whose slice contains the coin is in for a year filled with good fortune.
