Sea Turtles Conservation in Boac, Marinduque, Philippines

Olive Ridley Sea Turtle After 60 days of safeguarding the eggs of "pawikan" (Olive Ridley Turtle) the Provincial Tourism Office, Brgy. Lupac, Boac and DENR-MARINDUQUE carefully guided the baby turtles to the edge of the sea. These turtles are considered endangered because of their few remaining nesting sites in the world. If the eggs of these sea turtles are not protected the locals will harvest it for food.

Big thanks to Emil and Dulo for building the hatchery and carefully watching over them. Thank you DENR-Marinduque for protecting this endangered specie in the Philippines. Please continue your work for the preservation of endangered species in the province of Marinduque.

The olive ridley turtle has a circumtropical distribution living in tropical and warm waters of the Pacific( Philippines) and Indian Oceans from India, Arabia, Japan, and Micronesia south to southern Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. In the Atlantic Ocean, it has been observed off the western coast of Africa and the coasts of northern Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana, and Venezuela. Additionally, there have been records of the olive ridley in the Caribbean Sea as far north as Puerto Rico. It is also found in the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Galapagos Islands and Chile north to the Gulf of California, and along the Pacific coast to at least Oregon 2 Migratory movements have been studied less intensely in olive ridleys than other species of marine turtles, but they are believed to use the coastal waters of over 80 countries. These turtles are now in the endangered specie list.

My wife and I visited Luray Caverns in the spring of 1997. It was about 20 minutes just after we exited SKYLINE drive at the Thornton Gap of the Shenandoah National Park near Highway 211 of Virginia. This was our first tour of a commercial cave in the US. LURAY Caverns is not as popular as the Carlsbad Caverns of New Mexico or the Mammoth Caves of Kentucky, but it was a visit we will never forget.

Luray Caverns, originally called Luray Cave, is a large, celebrated commercial cave just west of Luray, Virginia, USA, which has drawn many visitors since its discovery in 1878. The underground cavern system is generously adorned with speleothems (columns, mud flows, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, mirrored pools, etc.). The caverns are perhaps best known for the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a lithophone made from solenoid fired strikers that tap stalactites of various sizes to produce tones similar to those of xylophones, tuning forks, or bells.

Luray Caverns, for more than 130 years, has been renowned as one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. A world of magic and majesty, still as marvelously beautiful as described in the newspaper headlines over a century ago. This was our first cave visit in the US. It was mesmerizing and a humbling experience to see this spectacular natural wonders of Virginia.



There are a couple restaurants in several rest areas if you forget to bring some food. There are also overnight accommodations or camping in the Park. The park of protected lands are haven to deer, songbirds, and other wild plants and animals. We drove Skyline from the Front Royal Entrance and exited at Thornton Gap near Highway 211. This is only about 1/3 of the 105 miles of scenic roads. After that we proceeded to tour the Luray Caverns in Luray, Virginia. Our tour of the Luray Caverns will be the topic in my next posting.
